Prevent OsteoporosisA new study by the Department of Food Science and Technology, University of California suggests that beer is a major dietary source of silicon, a key ingredient for increasing bone mineral density, thus helping to prevent osteoporosis.

Details of the study are published this month in the February issue of the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture.

Although it has the reputation for contributing to the development of so-called ‘belly chelera’, the reality is that what is really fattening snack that accompanies most of the time.

It is a natural diuretic drink, low in calories, fat and, by its content of carbonic acid, helps digestion.

Now also think it may help prevent the dreaded osteoporosis, a disease in which bone density decreases and increases the fragility of them for the loss of minerals.

“The factors of brewing that affect levels of silicon in beer have not been studied extensively,” said Charles Bamforth, author of the study.

“We have examined a wide range of styles of beer for their content in silicon and have also studied the impact of raw materials and the process of brewing in the amounts of silicon, which falls in wort and beer,” he added.

calciumIt is found in spinach, parsley, milk, cheese, sesame seeds, wholemeal bread, beans, almonds, broccoli, turnips, hard water, and fish, including herring roe.

Function is found in bones, teeth, muscles, nerves and blood, especially necessary for the growth of children and to prevent osteoporosis in older women.

Employment and dosage in cases of anxiety, anger, cramps in pregnancy, depression, heavy or painful menstruation, enlarged prostate, rheumatism, take 500 mg daily; in menopause take up to 1 g daily.
